Every state has unique benefits for veterans — find yours!
Most states with a full property-tax exemption for 100% P&T veterans make you apply — it is not automatic. File with your county assessor the same year you’re rated, and ask about retroactive refunds: several states pay back taxes to your effective rating date.
You don’t always need 100%. Many states scale the exemption — some start at 10–50% ratings with a fixed dollar reduction. Check your state’s card above before assuming you don’t qualify.
States like Texas (Hazlewood Act) and several others waive public-college tuition for children and spouses of disabled veterans — separate from and on top of the GI Bill and Chapter 35. Stack them in the right order and the GI Bill can be saved for grad school.
A number of states waive vehicle sales tax, registration fees, or both for disabled veterans — often tied to the VA auto grant or a rating threshold. On a $40,000 truck, that can be $2,000+ kept in your pocket.
Disabled-veteran plates are usually free or nearly free — and in many states they carry free parking at meters and airports, and toll discounts. Small money, every single week.
Most states give disabled veterans free or steeply discounted lifetime hunting and fishing licenses, and many add free state-park entry and camping discounts. One application, covered for life.
VA disability pay is federally tax-free everywhere — but states differ widely on taxing military retirement. If you’re a retiree choosing between two states, compare their retirement-pay rules first; it can be a four-figure annual swing.
State benefits do not follow you automatically. When you move, re-apply for the property-tax exemption, new plates, license waivers, and tuition programs in your new state — and check its residency clock, since some benefits require a waiting period.
Every state sets its own rules and amounts, and they change — always confirm details with your state’s Department of Veterans Affairs (linked on each state’s card above).

1. Nature of Services. Ratings Prime provides general education, coaching, and consulting. We are NOT a law firm, VA-accredited claims agent, attorney, or VSO. You are the claimant: you decide what to claim and you submit your claim.
2. No Guarantee of Specific Outcomes. We cannot guarantee any specific rating or compensation amount. Backed by my refund commitment: the VA decides every claim, so I never promise a result, but if your claim doesn't end in at least a 10% increase in your overall VA rating or an increase in your monthly compensation, you get a full refund. Terms are in the agreement.
